Illuminated castle behind bridge at night

Titlu Articol: ZIUA 5: Gulaș Venim! | Budapesta, Ungaria

Happy wife, happy life!

Title: DAY 5: Goulash, Here We Come! | Budapest, Hungary

The morning of Day 5 started comfortably. After waking up, sharing some coffee in the room, and showering, we went down to breakfast. City Hotel offers excellent gluten-free bread and other dietary options at breakfast, which made my wife incredibly happy. Happy wife, happy life!

We checked out and were soon back on the road. Last year, we encountered a lot of road construction on the highways through Slovenia and Hungary, but this year it was smooth sailing all the way. Driving across Slovenia is always such a delight; every village you spot from the highway looks pristine and lovely. With no trash or run-down homes in sight, it is truly a beautiful, clean country. The highways are fantastic and the mountain views are stunning. I really hope to dedicate a proper trip to exploring the country someday rather than just driving through it.

A Small Act of Kindness

Eventually, we crossed the border from Slovenia into Hungary. I don’t recall exactly how far into the country we were before we needed to stop for fuel, but after filling up the tank, I went inside to pay. My wife had already headed toward the restrooms. Once I settled the bill, I handed her my “impulse buy”—a chilled canned coffee—so I could take my turn.

That’s when I hit a snag: the restrooms were blocked by turnstiles. As I stood there trying to read the directions while simultaneously struggling to unzip the side pocket of my sports pants, the look on my face must have been pure confusion. Seeing my dilemma, a lady exiting the women’s restroom immediately raised her phone and tapped it on the payment terminal, generously paying the 1 Euro entrance fee for me.

I was incredibly touched by her kindness. I didn’t even get a proper chance to thank her because she just smiled and hurried off. If this had happened in Romania, I’m sure it would have sparked a long, friendly conversation before she walked away! I felt so grateful for her quick gesture. Such a small, simple act was a beautiful reminder that there is still so much goodness and humanity in the world.

With that memorable stop behind us, we were back on the highway. The ride was incredibly smooth—the road repairs from last year clearly paid off.

Arriving in Budapest

While Hungary did a fantastic job repairing its highways, it seems they neglected their city streets. The ride became pretty bumpy the moment we exited the highway. Fortunately, it was early afternoon and traffic was light as we crossed the beautiful Széchenyi Chain Bridge from Buda over to Pest. After maneuvering down some incredibly tight, narrow side streets, we pulled into our hotel’s parking garage. In a fun twist of timing, a car of fellow Romanians from Cluj parked right next to us.

We stayed at Hotel Vision. Given the complex history between Hungary and Romania, both my wife and I opted to check in using our US passports—joking to ourselves that Orban and Trump are best buddies. The gentleman checking us in flashed a massive smile the moment he saw our passports!

Politics aside, Hotel Vision is an exceptional property. It sits right on the Danube River directly across from the river cruise ship docks. The views of the Chain Bridge and the magnificent Buda side of the river are spectacular, especially at night when the historic buildings are fully illuminated.

Spice Markets & Scrambling for Gluten-Free Goulash

To give you a quick update on my wife: she has been healing little by little each day, but her broken nose and busted lip were still quite uncomfortable.

After checking into the hotel mid-afternoon, we headed out for a stroll. Budapest is an absolutely gorgeous city. We were only a single block away from the main pedestrian zone of the Old Town, so we happily strolled down the walkway past bustling shops and restaurants.

Our first major stop was the Great Market Hall, which was spectacular! We wanted to buy and sample almost everything we saw, but we had to strictly save our appetites for dinner. What we did buy was Hungary’s most famous staple and national spice: Paprika. We picked up three different varieties, including a very spicy one. My wife makes an awesome paprika chicken, and I’ve already asked her to whip up a batch for me using this authentic spicy blend.

🌶️ Souvenir Score: Three distinct types of authentic Hungarian paprika to take home.

Leaving the Great Market Hall, we were officially feeling hungry and began hunting for a restaurant. We walked down Váci Street, a lively pedestrian stretch packed with eateries—though a fair number of them looked like total tourist traps. We almost walked into one place, but they didn’t offer any gluten-free options.

Turning to Google Maps to guide our search, we discovered the Budapest Goulash – Lángos Grill Bar. It turned out to be an excellent find! I have been traveling to Romania since 2012, yet up until this specific stop in Budapest, I had never actually tried lángos. I was completely fixated on having an authentic goulash stew in the city; I told my wife that was my one big culinary mission for the stopover.

Guess what? I ordered the Goulash Lángos, and it was awesome! So savory and satisfying. My wife ordered the traditional Goulash Soup after our waiter checked with the chef to confirm they could prepare it entirely gluten-free. She loved it so much that she practically sounded like a Dyson vacuum cleaner while eating it!

With full bellies, we walked back to our hotel. I had a quick meeting to attend, and afterward, my wife and I stepped out onto the terrace after sunset to quietly enjoy the glowing city lights.

Breakfast Perks and Bumping Onward

The next morning, the rumbling of the streetcars outside our window woke us up a bit earlier than planned. Honestly, though, I much prefer waking up to the natural sounds of a city over a smartphone alarm anyway. We packed our bags, showed, and headed down to the dining room.

The incredible food trend in Budapest continued: the hotel serves fresh, in-house baked, gluten-free baguettes at breakfast. While the entire buffet spread was top-notch, this detail went above and beyond. My wife was absolutely stoked because the gluten-free bread was excellent, and they paired it with amazing butter. It’s funny how the little things in life can mean so much and completely set the tone for your day.

Soon enough, we left the hotel and braced ourselves for the bumpy streets of Budapest once more. I was grateful that the navigation back to the smooth highway took only about 15 to 20 minutes, as we had to carefully dodge some massive potholes.

Next stop: Timișoara—and you’ll never guess what we stumbled upon there!
