Blue-lit castle and clock tower at night

Soția mea a comandat Pad Thai, iar eu am ales Pad See Ew.

Road Trip Day 4: On the Road Again & First Feelings of Home

We had just left Brescia’s historic old city center and were approaching a somewhat confusing toll booth as we prepared to enter the A4 highway. Usually, the setup is straightforward: the gate is down, you pull a ticket from the dispensing machine, and the barrier rises. This time, however, the gate was already raised, but the light was glowing a strict red.

Thinking the open gate meant we had a free pass, I ignored the light and cruised right onto the autostrada.

A couple of hours later, as we reached the final toll booth before exiting Italy, I learned exactly how wrong that decision was. Facing a machine that demanded a non-existent ticket, I pressed the service button. A voice cracked over the intercom, asking where we had entered the highway. I explained the situation, they charged us accordingly, and we were on our way.

Lesson learned: Always take a ticket from the dispensing machine at a toll entrance, no matter what position the gate is in!

Navigating the Italian “Formula 1” Autostrada

The A4 around the greater Verona area was as chaotic as ever. I turned to my wife and joked that driving in Italy feels like training for a Formula 1 race. This particular stretch of the drive is notorious; traffic is dense, moves at breakneck speeds, and then abruptly grinds to a halt when a semi-truck suddenly swerves into the left lane to overtake an even slower truck.

Aside from that hour of high-adrenaline driving, the journey was relatively peaceful.

Knowing we were approaching the border, we pulled into a gas station to fill up the tank. We had recently read in the news that Slovenia had initiated gasoline rationing due to the geopolitical tensions and the outbreak of the war in Iran. To play it safe, we wanted to ensure a full tank—which would easily carry us all the way through Slovenia and straight into Hungary before our next fuel stop.

Checking Into an Old Favorite in Ljubljana

By mid-afternoon, we arrived in Ljubljana and checked into The City Hotel. We’ve stayed here before, and it remains a thoroughly solid choice. It holds a well-deserved 4.6 rating on Google and a 9.1 on Booking.com.

Our room was wonderfully spacious, featuring an incredibly comfortable bed and excellent pillows. Best of all, we had a lovely, sizeable fifth-floor terrace boasting an uninterrupted view of Ljubljana Castle, which lights up beautifully after dark.

  • Pro-Tip for Drivers: If you plan to stay here and want to park on-site, make sure to ask the staff to reserve a spot in the hotel’s underground car park ahead of your arrival.

Street Food and a Comforting Taste of Home

After checking in, we left our centrally located hotel around 3:00 PM for a leisurely stroll toward Prešeren Square. Feeling a bit hungry, we stopped for a quick bite at a walk-up window called Babu’s Asian Street Food. We hadn’t enjoyed quality Asian cuisine in quite some time, and since this spot boasted a stellar 4.8 rating with over 1,000 reviews, we had to try it. My wife ordered the Pad Thai while I went with the Pad See Ew. Both dishes were absolutely delicious and hit the spot.

Later that evening, around 8:00 PM, we headed down to the lobby restaurant for a lighter meal. It was here that my wife experienced her first real feeling of home on this journey.

On the menu was a traditional soup made with root vegetables. It was remarkably similar to the comforting, classic soups she loves back in Romania, bridging the distance of our road trip with a single bowl.

It was an uneventful day in the grand scheme of travel, but we were completely fine with that. After a wonderful night’s sleep, followed by a fresh breakfast and hot coffee the next morning, we felt entirely recharged and ready to drive across Slovenia toward Budapest, Hungary.
