Iorgu Dumitrescu, Imperiul de 500 de hectare și Principele

Până la începutul secolului al XX-lea, Dealu Mare devenise rafinata „pivniță a Bucureștiului”, iar Iorgu Dumitrescu era regele său incontestabil. El nu deținea doar câteva parcele, ci stăpânea o moșie colosală de 500 de hectare, care forma un amfiteatru natural în Tohani.

O casă plină de istorie

Inima acestui imperiu era reședința privată a lui Iorgu, cunoscută astăzi sub numele de Conacul Apogeum. În acele saloane, Dumitrescu își punea la punct strategia de a produce vinuri roșii capabile să concureze de la egal la egal cu legendele din Bordeaux. Era însuflețit de viziunea de a crea cel mai bun vin roșu care să rivalizeze cu Franța — o ambiție de talie mondială ce oglindea calitatea solului său.

Un scandal regal

În ciuda celor 500 de hectare de „aur lichid”, aristocrația cu „sânge albastru” din București îi privea de sus pe cei din familia Dumitrescu, considerându-i simpli oameni de rând. Satirele din saloane sugerau că nicio avere, oricât de mare, nu le-ar putea șterge rădăcinile „țărănești”.

Această tensiune a explodat în 1931, când Principele Nicolae (fratele regelui) s-a îndrăgostit de fiica lui Iorgu, Ioana Dumitrescu-Doletti. Principele a ales dragostea în detrimentul coroanei, căsătorindu-se cu Ioana într-o ceremonie secretă la biserica din Tohani. Cei doi și-au trăit povestea de dragoste pe domeniu, dovedind că pământul „de rând” al Tohanului era mai prețios decât aerul sufocant al palatului.

By the early 20th century, Dealu Mare was the sophisticated “cellar of Bucharest,” and Iorgu Dumitrescu was its undisputed king. He didn’t just own a few plots; he commanded a massive 500-hectare estate that formed a natural amphitheater in Tohani.

The House of History – The heart of this empire was Iorgu’s private residence, which we know today as the Apogeum Mansion (Conacul Apogeum). In those halls, Dumitrescu planned his strategy to produce red wines that could go toe-to-toe with the legends of Bordeaux. He was inspired by a vision to create the best red wine to compete with France—a world-class ambition that mirrored the quality of his soil.

A Royal Scandal – Despite his 500 hectares of liquid gold, the “blue blood” aristocracy of Bucharest looked down their noses at the Dumitrescus, viewing them as commoners. Satire in the salons suggested that no amount of wealth could wash away their “peasant” roots. This friction exploded in 1931 when Prince Nicolae (the King’s brother) fell in love with Iorgu’s daughter, Ioana Dumitrescu-Doletti. The Prince chose love over the crown, marrying Ioana in a secret ceremony at the Tohani church. They lived out their romance on the estate, proving that the “common” earth of Tohani was more valuable than the stifling air of the palace.
